Xalé is the third film in the director’s trilogy focused on women. In October 2022, Senegal’s Oscars selection committee announced the film as the country’s entry for the 95th Academy Awards for Best International Feature Film. The film is set in Dakar with a time-shifting chronology and follows the story of 15-year-old twins Awa and Adama. After the death of their grandmother, they are placed under the care of their uncle Atoumane. In accordance with their grandmother’s last wish, Atoumane marries his resistant cousin Fatou. Her rejection of him leads Atoumane to take out his frustration on Awa, with life-changing consequences for both of them.
